Installing WordPress Manually with cPanel Hosting

Video Transcript

There are basically two ways to install the self-hosted version of WordPress manually and automatically.

Both have their pluses and minuses. So to that end we’re going to cover both.
This class will cover the manual install using the file manager and your web hosting services control panel and, in this demonstration, I’ll be using c panel. If you’re using Plesk and cannot locate the root directory, then contact your hosting service. Usually the root directory in Plesk is going to be the http docs folder, but again, if not share, just contact the hosting company. Now in the next class we’re going to cover another manual installation process that uses an FTP program instead of your seat panels control panel. That class will be for anybody that doesn’t have access to a control panel like plus curse handle. Now before we get started on your desktop, create a folder and name it something, whatever you want to call it.

I usually just call mine the name of the domain or name of the site and inside of that folders for I’m going to keep all the stuff related to that site. Project files, images, videos, even a text document like this one here that contains all my login stuff, email, passwords, email names, all that stuff. That way anytime I need something related to that site, I’ve got one place to go. And we’re going to be revisiting this document here in just a bit. So first thing we need to do is to download WordPress. And by the way, I’ve already done that here and where I got this was at WordPress.org/download and just scroll down a bit here. No matter what version is being displayed at the time that you’re watching this video, the process is still the same. So let’s go ahead and download this to your computer, log into your c panels, control panel, go to file manager, navigate to the root directory or wherever you want your WordPress installation to be.

And this is where I want my installation to be right here for this domain and I go to upload. Now if your control panel looks different than mine, don’t sweat it. It just might be a different version of c panel. And at this point I can either click on the blue select file button, the navigate to the location in my computer where that zip files APP that I downloaded from WordPress or I can just drag and drop it in here. I’m just going to drag and drop it in there like so. Now while this is being uploaded, I’m going to go ahead and create a database. Let’s go back to our c panel control panel and then scroll down until you get to the section labeled databases and you’ll probably have either databases like this, my SQL databases and or my SQL database was it.

They both will do the same thing. The wizard just has a couple of steps. Let’s do the wizard. Now you’re going to be naming the database. You’re going to create a user of the database and then you’re going to tie the two together. Now with the database name, you’ve got a certain number of characters maximum, I think it’s like 60 but with us prefix here we’re down to 54 so yours might be a little bit different, but name the database, whatever you want. I’m going to go with something related to my site and myself. I usually name the user the same as the database if the size permits because go to the next step. The username can only have a maximum of 16 characters like it says here, so we’re going to come up a little bit short, but again you can name years anything you want.
I’m going to go ahead and copy this, put it in my text document here or database name and the username is the same thing except no eat cause we couldn’t squeeze that in there. Only seven characters allowed now than for the password. I use the password generator and I usually just regenerate that just to get a fresh one. Copy that to my clipboard. Check the box here that I’ve copied it and put it in a safe place. Let’s go ahead and do that right here and then click on use password.

Very strong. We’re good. Create user. Now we want to give the user the privileges that it needs and I’m just going to check all privileges. Scroll on down and click on next step and we’re good. Return home. See Our uploads, do them. It’s done close out of that. Now then let’s select this zip file and then extract right where we want it.

Close this out. Now all the files that we need are inside this folder. However, I need all those files outside of that folder right here. So how I do that is move them. I’m going to open this up, select all left, click hold and drag that down to the root directory I want right there and go back up a level and you see right there, I’m in the root directory and all of these files are where I want them. Now do a little house cleaning. This is an empty folders. If I can get her to that, the zip file. Don’t need that anymore. It’s like that. And then delete those. Now we’ve got our files uploaded, we’ve got our database created, now we need to connect it to. So come on back to our domain name right here. Refresh. Now our installation process is taking place.

Click on continue after you choose. The language is, tells you what you’re going to need. And that’s the stuff that he wrote down or cockpit over to our text document here. So let’s go and the database name here, database user name is the same except for no e and the password and 99% of the time the database host will be local. Host some hosting services though that’s not the case. If you’re not sure, contact your hosting service. You can just try local hosts first. And if you get error messages after you try to install, chances are you’re one of those hosts. So go ahead and contact your hosting service at that point and tell them what you’re trying to do and need to get the name of the host. I believe one in one is a hosting company that the local host is not the case and you can change the table prefix if you want and even tells you here that you need to if you’re running multiple WordPress installation on a single database.

But we’re gonna leave it at the default for now. Click on submit, run the insulation, Yay. And here we are, site title and you can change this at any time but we’re just going to put and then the username. This is for your WordPress login information and it gives you some hints down below the boxes here. One thing you should not do is use admin. That’s a big no, no, so this is the email address. I’m going to be using the username and go with Clarke Quay and you’ll put it all in lowercase and we’ll put the email address in here because you do need to have an active email address in there and we’re going to copy this password, put her over here in our text document right here as the blog login info. And I’m going to check this box here to tell the search engines. Don’t bother me just yet. Come back later to index my site because I want to build it up first and I’ll show you how you can change that around in an upcoming class. Right now, Click on install word press.

There we are. Let’s go and login. We now have our brand new WordPress installed manually using the c panels control panel, and that’s gonna bring us to the end of this class. Thanks for checking it out and you have a great day.
